One of the most popular additions to the Win Mumby Gymnasium has been the climbing room. Woodstock hired climbing specialist Suman Mitra in the Fall of 2009 to teach enthusiastic students the art of mastering a climb.
Students of all ages, down to even the ECP/KG kids, get a chance to spend some time in the climbing room, where they learn about how to wear a harness, how to make knots, and how to belay someone who is climbing the wall.
Students receive instruction in two kinds of climb. The first is the 'Top Rope Belay Climb', and for more advanced climbers, the 'Lead Climb'. Several of the students have started to make their own routes up the wall using colour-coded holds on the wall.
Mitra has also initiated a Climbing Club, consisting of interested students looking for more climbing challenges. The next step is to take the lessons they learn in this controlled indoor environment out to the rocks and hills surrounding Woodstock.
Furthermore, the Climbing Wall has already been used by the renowned vertical dance company, Project Bandaloop, founded and directed by Woodstock graduate, Amelia Rudolph '82 to hold workshops for several interested students.
