Water for Paboli (Hindi Version)
Rev. Robert C. "Bob" Alter
"Development organizations must listen to the people they are trying to help. They have their own very good ideas of what they want," said former Woodstock School Principal, Rev. Bob Alter at the launch of his book, "Water for Paboli" at Oakville, Mussoorie, on November 14, 2002.
The book describes the founding of Mussoorie Gramin Vikas Samiti (MGVS) in 1981 and the twenty years of work which followed. He dedicated the book to the people of the Garhwal villages where the organization worked who, he said, taught him much more than he taught them. Woodstock School has published the Hindi version of "Water for Paboli" in order to enable more people to read this interesting and important book. The English version is published by Orient Longman. Mrs. Saroj Kapadia did the long and careful work of translation; Mr. Chitaranjan Datt and Mr. Dinkar Rai from the Landour Language School proofread and edited the text.
The launch was attended by many who were involved in the work at MGVS, including: Mr. Surinder Singh, manager of MGVS, members of the advisory committee and board, and the pradhans of two of the villages where MGVS worked. Representatives of several other Garhwali villages also attended, together with Principal David Jeffery and several Woodstock staff and board members. Local NGOs and one of the leaders of the Ecological Task Force, Lieutenant-Colonel S. S. Raghav also listened with interest to Bob Alter's speech, which he delivered in both Hindi and English.
(We regret that the English version of Water for Paboli is not available from the Woodstock store.)
